Take-Two Subpoenas Microsoft and Discord to Unmask GTA 6 Leakers
Take-Two Interactive obtained federal court approval to compel Microsoft and Discord to hand over account data tied to Cyberleek identities, with a September 4 deadline for compliance.
As Cyberleek continues to release unauthorised GTA 6 footage ahead of Rockstar’s August 27 Netflix showcase, Take-Two Interactive has escalated its legal response — filing federal subpoenas that compel two major tech companies to expose the identity of the people behind the leaks.
Federal Court Approves Subpoenas Against Microsoft and Discord
On or around August 20, 2026, a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York approved Take-Two’s subpoena requests. The filings invoke the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, a mechanism that allows rights holders to demand user identifying information from online platforms without filing a full civil lawsuit first.
Microsoft and Discord have been ordered to comply by September 4, 2026 — two weeks after the subpoenas were approved and well ahead of GTA 6’s November 19 launch window.
What Take-Two Is Demanding
The scope of the data requests is extensive. According to reporting by Tom’s Hardware, Kotaku, and Variety, Take-Two is asking for:
- MachineGuid and MSA device identifiers — hardware-level identifiers tied to Windows installations that can link a specific physical computer to an account
- Registration and last-login IP addresses
- Phone numbers associated with the accounts
- Linked Google and Xbox account connections
- OneDrive contents for the targeted accounts
Critically, the subpoena does not target a single identified account. Instead, Take-Two requested data for every account that participated in three named Discord servers since June 1, 2026 — a dragnet approach that could implicate not just the core Cyberleek members but anyone who communicated in those spaces.
What the Leakers Have Said
Cyberleek has operated with a stated motivation beyond pure disclosure. The group published a manifesto on its site criticising game industry practices including digital-only pre-orders, day-one DLC paywalls, and what it characterised as anti-consumer restrictions. The no-disc edition of GTA 6 — Rockstar’s decision to ship only a code-in-box physical version — has featured prominently in that framing.
The group has also been linked to promotion of a cryptocurrency meme coin, raising questions about whether the leaks serve ideological or financial goals. Rockstar has continued filing DMCA takedowns across YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and Streamable throughout the leak campaign.
What Comes Next
Whether the subpoenas lead to identification and litigation in time to affect the November 19 launch is uncertain. Legal processes at this scale typically unfold over months, not weeks. What the filings do signal is that Take-Two has treated Cyberleek as a serious enough breach to pursue through the federal courts rather than relying solely on platform-level takedowns.
GTA 6 remains confirmed for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s official Netflix Extended Look premieres on August 27 at 3:00 PM ET.
