Take-Two Q1 FY2027 Earnings: GTA 6 Pre-Orders Beat Forecasts, Called Unprecedented
Take-Two reported 1.39 billion dollars in net bookings for Q1 FY2027 on August 7, with CEO Strauss Zelnick calling GTA 6 pre-order demand unprecedented and astonishing despite only five days of sales captured in the quarter.
Take-Two Interactive delivered its first-quarter fiscal year 2027 earnings on Friday, August 7, 2026 — the first financial report to cover any portion of the Grand Theft Auto VI pre-order window — and the headline from the call was unambiguous: Strauss Zelnick described the early sales response as “unprecedented and astonishing,” a characterisation he returned to multiple times with reporters.
What the Numbers Show
Take-Two reported $1.39 billion in net bookings for Q1 FY2027, covering the period from April 1 through June 30, 2026. That figure landed above the company’s own guidance range of $1.32 billion to $1.37 billion, driven in part by better-than-expected performance from NBA 2K and the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
The critical detail is context: of the 91-day quarter, GTA 6 pre-orders were live for exactly five days — June 25 through June 30. Despite that narrow window, the numbers moved the company’s total results above forecast. Take-Two did not disclose specific unit counts for GTA 6 pre-orders, a standard practice during a live pre-order period since consumers can still cancel before launch. Third-party analytics firm Newzoo had estimated roughly $260 million in global digital pre-order spending during that opening week; Take-Two neither confirmed nor contested that figure.
Zelnick reaffirmed the company’s full-year FY2027 net bookings guidance at $8.0 to $8.2 billion — a forecast built squarely around GTA 6 launching on November 19.
Pre-Orders Are Beating Take-Two’s Own Models
Multiple reports from the earnings call noted that Zelnick told analysts GTA 6 pre-orders had “vastly” beaten the company’s internal projections — meaning the surprise is not just relative to analyst expectations but to Take-Two’s own financial modelling. The company had presumably built conservative pre-order estimates into its budget; the actual demand is coming in ahead of those internal targets.
What that means in practice: Take-Two entered the launch window more financially confident than it had planned. The August 7 call also confirmed no major campaign adjustments are anticipated — the marketing plan remains on schedule, with the August 27 Netflix extended look as the next major milestone.
”One of the Hors d’Oeuvres”
Perhaps the most telling signal from the earnings call was how Zelnick framed the August 27 event. Asked about the Netflix premiere, he described it as “one of the hors d’oeuvres” — implying that the extended look is the opening course of a larger pre-launch marketing campaign, not the centrepiece. That language signals Rockstar and Take-Two intend to sustain promotional activity through September and October, with more announcements planned between August 27 and the November 19 release date.
The company has not specified what other marketing beats are planned, but the appetite for continued spend is consistent with Take-Two’s earlier statements about a broad, modern, digital-first campaign distinct from how GTA 5 was marketed in 2013.
What Comes Next
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix on Thursday, August 27 at 3:00 PM ET, with the footage going live on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the official GTA VI website at 9:00 PM ET the same evening — free to anyone without a Netflix subscription. That event is now 17 days away.
GTA 6 remains on track for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders are open now. A PC release date has not been announced.
