Actor Stephen Root confirmed he voices drug trafficker Brian Heder in GTA 6, becoming the first publicly verified cast member ahead of the November 19 launch and prompting Rockstar to remind all performers their NDAs remain in effect until launch day.
Actor Stephen Root — best known for playing Milton in Office Space and Bill Dauterive in King of the Hill — has become the first publicly confirmed voice actor in Grand Theft Auto VI. His disclosure reportedly led Rockstar Games to issue an NDA reminder to everyone else in the cast.
How Root Confirmed His Role
Root revealed his involvement in an interview with the Associated Press, confirming he voices Brian Heder, described in Rockstar’s character documentation as “a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the [Leonida] Keys.” That puts Heder in the fictional Florida Keys analogue that forms part of GTA 6’s sprawling open world — a region associated with the Everglades-and-islands stretch south of Vice City.
The actor acknowledged that audience recognition had already undermined the secret before any formal announcement. “There were too many people who knew me from King of the Hill and my voice, so I think that secret kind of got divulged,” Root told the AP, suggesting fans had identified him from prior footage or the Extended Look on Netflix.
Rockstar’s Response: The NDA Stands Until November 19
Following Root’s confirmation, Rockstar Games reportedly emailed all performers on GTA 6 to reiterate the terms of their non-disclosure agreements. The message is claimed to have read: “We would like to remind everyone to please remember your NDA. The date you may announce your involvement is still November 19th.”
That timeline means the full voice cast is expected to stay unconfirmed until the game launches. Root’s acknowledgment stands as the only verified casting ahead of release. Rockstar has not commented on his remarks publicly.
What Brian Heder Suggests About the Keys Region
The detail of a Keys-based smuggler operating as a confirmed NPC adds some texture to a part of the map that has appeared in leaked footage. The Keys are one of six distinct regions reportedly making up the state of Leonida. A veteran drug runner rooted in a previous era of smuggling fits the retro-criminal atmosphere Rockstar has associated with that area.
The voice actors behind main protagonists Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval remain unconfirmed by Rockstar. No further cast announcements are expected before the November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
