Rockstar Workers Union Holds First Formal Talks — Five Proposals on the Table
The Rockstar Game Workers Union described its first face-to-face meeting with Rockstar management on July 22 as a step in the right direction, securing a roadmap for faster negotiation and laying down five key demands ahead of GTA 6's November launch.
The push for union recognition at Rockstar Games reached a new milestone on July 22, 2026, when the Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU) held its first formal meeting with company management. The outcome was cautiously positive: the union described the session as “a step in the right direction” and said both sides agreed on a roadmap toward a faster negotiation process.
This is the first face-to-face engagement between the two parties since the RGWU filed its formal voluntary recognition request on June 30, giving Rockstar a 10-working-day window to respond — a deadline that passed without a direct yes or no from the company.
What Was Agreed and What Comes Next
The immediate outcome of the July 22 meeting is not recognition itself but rather a structured process. The first task for both sides is defining the bargaining unit — that is, agreeing on exactly which employees the union would represent if recognition is granted. Only once that scope is settled can formal recognition talks advance.
If voluntary recognition is ultimately refused, the RGWU can refer the matter to the UK’s Central Arbitration Committee, which has the authority to impose statutory recognition under specific conditions. The union has not taken that route yet, and the tone of the July 22 update from the RGWU was constructive rather than combative.
The Union’s Five Demands
The RGWU entered the meeting with five formal proposals, which it posted publicly on X (formerly Twitter) after the session:
- No crunch: overtime should always be paid rather than built implicitly into contracts
- Pay transparency: bonuses and pay structures made clear to workers
- Flexible working: restoration of remote and hybrid work options that were scaled back during GTA 6’s final development phase
- No AI displacement: a commitment that no worker’s role should be replaced by AI tools
- No layoffs: job security protections, particularly relevant after the October 2025 dismissals
The RGWU, backed by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), now represents staff across Rockstar’s five UK studios in Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds, and London. It is reportedly the largest game studio union in Europe by membership.
The Broader Picture
Rockstar has not issued a public statement following the July 22 meeting. A separate employment tribunal concerning the 31 dismissals from October 2025 — which the union characterised as union-busting — is still scheduled to begin in September 2026, potentially running into October, just weeks before GTA 6 launches on November 19.
Whether union talks remain cooperative or escalate in that final stretch before launch remains to be seen. For now, both sides appear to be talking.
