Piper Sandler Raises GTA 6 Launch Estimate to 48 Million Units as Reddit Community Quadruples
Analyst firm Piper Sandler has lifted its GTA 6 launch sales projection to 48 million units, citing a dramatic surge in r/GTA6 subreddit traffic that more than tripled following the August 27 extended gameplay look.
Analyst firm Piper Sandler has significantly revised its launch-window sales estimate for Grand Theft Auto VI upward to 48 million units — a notable jump from the roughly 35 million figure the firm cited in its earlier mid-2026 models. The revision is driven by an extraordinary surge in subreddit activity following the August 27 extended gameplay preview on Netflix.
The Reddit Traffic Signal
Piper Sandler’s forecasting approach relies partly on subreddit engagement as a demand proxy, building a model from roughly 15 prior major game launches that correlates weekly unique community visitors with opening-period sales. For GTA 6, the data since August has been striking.
Weekly traffic to r/GTA6 stood at approximately 700,000 users in mid-August. After footage from the game leaked in late August, that figure roughly doubled to around 1.4 million. The official Netflix extended look on August 27 drove the count to approximately 2 million weekly visitors. By the first week of September, the community had reached roughly 2.7 million weekly users — nearly four times the mid-August baseline in under three weeks.
Applied to that level of community momentum, Piper Sandler’s model now outputs a launch estimate of 48 million units. If realised, that would represent approximately four times the largest launch-week total ever recorded for a video game.
Context and Caveats
The revised Piper Sandler figure sits at the higher end of the current analyst spectrum, though it is far from the most bullish estimate on record. Other firms have issued projections ranging from 30 million to 85 million units depending on timeframe, pricing assumptions, and how aggressively they weight GTA Online’s eventual launch as a revenue multiplier.
Subreddit traffic is a useful leading indicator of consumer attention but is not a direct measure of sales. It does not capture regional pricing differences, the speed of GTA 6 Online’s post-launch ramp, or how physical versus digital splits affect opening-week reporting. All analyst projections should be treated as informed estimates rather than confirmed guidance — Rockstar and Take-Two have not published any official sales targets.
What the Reddit data does confirm is that the August 27 extended look achieved its likely purpose: moving a large number of people from passive awareness to active engagement with GTA 6 content, just under three months before the game’s November 19, 2026 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
