Analytics Firm Newzoo Says GTA 6 Has the Strongest Pre-Order Campaign on Record

Newzoo tracked roughly 260 million dollars in global digital pre-order spending in the first week after GTA 6 pre-orders opened June 25, projecting 37 to 51 million copies sold in launch week alone.

With Take-Two’s earnings call scheduled for August 7 — the first financial report to cover any portion of the GTA 6 pre-order window — attention has turned to the third-party data already on the table. Analytics firm Newzoo has published what may be the most detailed independent read on GTA 6 pre-order performance to date, and the numbers are striking.

What Newzoo Measured

Newzoo tracked approximately $180 million in digital pre-order spend across the United States and the five largest European markets during the final week of June 2026 — the first seven days the pre-orders were live. When scaled to account for markets outside that direct measurement window, the firm estimates global digital pre-order spend reached roughly $260 million in that opening week.

To put that in context, Newzoo described GTA 6’s start as “the strongest pre-order campaign on record,” surpassing any prior title in their dataset. That dataset spans every major franchise release Newzoo has tracked, which makes the label one of the more concrete data points available before official figures arrive from Take-Two.

The First-Week Sales Projection

Using historical ratios between pre-order volume and total first-week sales — where a game’s pre-orders typically account for around 5.8% of week-one sales — Newzoo projects GTA 6 could sell between 37 million and 51 million copies in its first week on sale. The range reflects uncertainty around how heavily the game front-loads: if consumers pre-order at a historically elevated rate relative to total sales, the lower end of the range applies; if the ratio tracks closer to historical norms, the upper end becomes plausible.

At the higher projection, launch-week revenue alone would approach $5 billion at standard pricing. Even the lower bound would represent the biggest entertainment launch ever recorded.

Setting the Record Straight on Viral Figures

Newzoo explicitly flagged the widely circulated claim that GTA 6 had already generated $1 billion in pre-order revenue as “absurd” and unsupported by any traceable methodology. Separately, reports of 39 million pre-orders circulating on social media have been broadly debunked, with no credible sourcing identified.

The $260 million figure is a digital-spend estimate from a specific tracked window, not a unit count, and covers only a subset of markets in the campaign’s first seven days. Total pre-orders across all regions, platforms, and retail formats would be a different and larger figure.

Official data is expected August 7, when Take-Two reports fiscal Q1 2027 results — the first quarter to capture any GTA 6 pre-order activity. That will be the authoritative benchmark against which all third-party estimates, including Newzoo’s, get measured.
