GTA 6 File Size Tipped at 150-200GB With Pre-Load Eyed for Mid-November

Industry estimates put Grand Theft Auto VI at roughly 150-200GB plus a day-one patch, while store listings suggest pre-loading could open around November 12 ahead of the November 19 launch.

With Grand Theft Auto VI now locked in for a November 19, 2026 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, attention has turned to a practical question many players are already worrying about: how much storage space will you actually need to clear?

How Big Is GTA 6 Expected to Be?

Rockstar Games has not published an official install size, so every figure circulating right now is an estimate rather than a confirmed number. That said, industry watchers broadly expect the base game to land somewhere in the region of 150GB to 200GB on console, a range drawn from the sheer scale of the game and from precedent set by other modern open-world AAA titles.

The bigger consideration is the day-one patch. Rockstar games typically ship with a sizeable launch update, and estimates suggest a patch in the 30GB to 50GB range is plausible. Stack that on top of the base install and the realistic on-disk footprint could push toward 200GB to 250GB. None of this is officially confirmed, so treat these numbers as informed guesses until Rockstar says otherwise.

If accurate, that footprint would make GTA 6 one of the largest single-player installs on current-gen hardware, and many players will likely need to free up space or invest in additional SSD storage ahead of release.

When Can You Pre-Load?

According to store listings cited in recent reports, pre-loading is tipped to open around November 12, 2026, roughly a week before launch. Rockstar has not formally announced a pre-load date, so that timing remains unconfirmed and could shift.

A pre-load window matters more than usual here because of the expected file size. Downloading 150GB or more over a slower connection can take many hours, so an early start would let players have the game ready to go at launch rather than waiting on the day.

A Note on Physical Copies

One wrinkle worth flagging: reports indicate the launch “physical” edition is a download code in a box rather than a game disc, with a true disc release reportedly arriving later, around December 2026. That means most players, physical buyers included, will still be downloading the game and benefiting from any pre-load window.

As always with pre-release estimates, expect these figures to firm up as launch approaches.
