GTA 6: An Extended Look — Every Major Detail From the 26-Minute Netflix Showcase
From a returning six-star wanted level and a new Criminal Profile system to a map three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2, here is everything Rockstar confirmed in its August 27 gameplay premiere.
After years of trailers and community speculation, Rockstar Games finally showed the world how Grand Theft Auto VI actually plays. GTA 6: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27, 2026 at 3:00 PM ET — a roughly 26-minute presentation that stands as the longest official preview Rockstar has ever released for any of its games. The same footage went live on YouTube and the official GTA VI website at 9:00 PM ET that evening, available free to anyone regardless of a Netflix subscription.
The Story Setup and the Map
The showcase opens on a story beat that serves as the demonstration vehicle: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are sent by a character named Boobie Ike to collect product from a local drug crew. The deal falls apart when police storm the building and a firefight erupts — a classic GTA scenario that lets Rockstar demonstrate combat, the wanted system, and environmental traversal all at once without it feeling like a feature checklist.
On world scale, Rockstar confirmed that the state of Leonida is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s map and roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s Los Santos. Everything shown in the presentation was captured on a standard PlayStation 5.
Systems Confirmed for the First Time
Several mechanics were officially unveiled for the first time:
Six-star wanted level — The fifth-star cap from GTA 5 is gone. The full six-star scale is back, and escaping at three stars or higher inside Vice City’s narrow, traffic-heavy streets is reportedly a different challenge from suburban or highway chases.
Criminal Profile — This is Rockstar’s long-term criminality tracker, distinct from the moment-to-moment wanted star system. Completing a robbery without unnecessary violence raises a player’s professional standing; excessive or sloppy violence degrades it. Unlike wanted stars, which clear after a clean escape, the Criminal Profile persists and accumulates across the playthrough.
Non-lethal options — Shooting an enemy in the arm or leg can incapacitate rather than kill, giving players a tool for minimising casualties during confrontations.
Also confirmed: a split health bar, limited weapon carry capacity, multiple methods for breaking into vehicles, and the ability to access food and drinks from store fridges and refrigerators in the environment.
Side activities demonstrated include fishing, basketball, gym sessions, boxing, scuba diving, jetskiing, kayaking, dirtbiking, basejumping, mini golf, and clubbing. The in-game smartphone features an integrated social feed where players can browse short viral videos and follow in-world accounts. Some press reports following the event have described a story length reportedly around 80 hours, though Rockstar has not confirmed any official figure.
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders remain open. A PC release window has not been confirmed.
