GTA 6 Officially Confirms Body Weight System and Expanded NPC Diversity via Dazed Interview

A Dazed Magazine cover story published August 26 brings official Rockstar confirmation that GTA 6 revives the body weight and fitness mechanics from GTA San Andreas, and details the most varied NPC population the studio has ever built.

The day before Rockstar’s August 27 Netflix showcase, Dazed Magazine published an extensive cover-story interview — part of its New Idols issue — featuring six Rockstar Games developers across departments: Rob Nelson, Rupert Humphries, Michael Wiafe, Jamie-Lee Lloyd, Stu Petri, and Jillian Carr. Together they covered character design, narrative philosophy, world-building, NPC systems, and gameplay mechanics. Among the details confirmed for the first time are two systems with deep roots in the series’ history.

The Body Weight and Fitness System Returns

Rockstar confirmed in the Dazed interview that GTA 6 revives the body weight and fitness mechanics first introduced in GTA: San Andreas in 2004, making it the first mainline entry to carry that feature in over two decades. Both Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos will visibly change appearance based on player choices: overeating causes weight gain, while regular workouts — gyms are a confirmed side activity — build muscle tone. The system extends beyond the San Andreas equivalent by factoring in sleep deprivation: characters who go without rest for extended in-game periods, whether through prolonged police chases or multi-day benders, will show the effects on their faces as well as their body shape.

Unlike San Andreas, where the mechanic applied exclusively to CJ, GTA 6 applies the weight system to both protagonists. Players managing story sequences or free-roaming as either character will see the habits they build reflected in how Jason or Lucia look over time.

NPC Diversity and World Reactivity

Rockstar described what it calls the most detailed and varied NPC population in any of its games to date. Pedestrians across Leonida vary across a significantly wider set of visual parameters than GTA 5 — age, height, body type, tattoos, piercings, cosmetic surgery, and fashion choices all differ, and the mix shifts noticeably depending on where in the state a player is. The tourist-heavy beachfronts of Vice City will look demographically different from the rural interior towns deeper in Leonida.

On reactivity, Rockstar described the design goal as creating a world that feels like it genuinely notices the player. Pedestrians and bystanders will react more dynamically to what the characters do around them — something press preview coverage from the same period described as NPCs being “less like NPCs than ever.” The full scope of how persistent this awareness is across sessions has not been formally detailed.

New Screenshots and Magazine Cover

The Dazed feature arrived alongside seven new official GTA 6 screenshots and a magazine cover — the first significant batch of still images Rockstar had released in months, offering fresh looks at locations and character moments not previously shown in trailers or promotional material.

The cover story also noted that development on GTA 6 has been running roughly since 2013, a timeline consistent with what Rockstar’s own team members have previously referenced in various contexts.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders are open. A PC release window has not been confirmed.
