GTA 6 Confirmed at 30fps on Console at Launch, Performance Mode Not Promised
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson confirmed GTA 6 targets 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch, with no performance mode announced and the studio still undecided on whether a higher frame rate option will arrive post-launch.
One of the more divisive technical details to emerge from the August 27 extended look has now been formally addressed: GTA 6 will launch at 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, with no performance mode confirmed for any platform on day one.
The confirmation comes from Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North, who told a Portuguese outlet shortly after the extended look premiered that the studio was still consulting its technical team before it could say whether a 60fps option would exist at launch or arrive afterward. Nelson’s framing — “for now” — leaves the door open to a post-launch patch, but it sets expectations at zero for November 19.
No Performance Mode for PS5 Pro Either
PlayStation 5 Pro owners, who might have expected an enhanced frame rate option given the console’s boosted GPU performance, are not guaranteed anything extra at launch either. Rockstar has not announced a PS5 Pro Enhanced patch and has not confirmed whether one is planned. While Sony’s premium console has shipped with improved frame rate support for several third-party titles, it is not automatic — developers must implement the enhancement, and Rockstar has not indicated it intends to do so on day one.
The extended look footage itself was captured on a standard PlayStation 5, running at the confirmed 30fps target. Given the scale of the world — Rockstar has confirmed Leonida is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s map — a 30fps target is not surprising, but it has still generated significant discussion among players who expected current-generation hardware to do more.
What Post-Launch Options Could Look Like
GTA V is useful context here. Rockstar eventually released 60fps upgrades for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of GTA V as part of the Expanded and Enhanced re-release in 2022. That suggests Rockstar is not philosophically opposed to higher frame rates — the question is whether the same path is feasible for a game of GTA 6’s complexity at its current stage of development.
Some outlets have flagged that a 40fps mode — common on modern displays running at 120Hz via VRR — would arguably be the more meaningful addition over a flat 60fps mode, offering a middle ground between visual fidelity and responsiveness without the compromises a full performance mode typically requires. Rockstar has not indicated it is working on any of these options; they remain community expectations, not confirmed plans.
Players on PC will not need to be bound by any of these constraints, though no PC release date has been announced. Rockstar has confirmed PC development is underway but has not given a window.
